Implants
Implants are one of the greatest achievements in modern dentistry.
Implants are man made replacements for missing natural tooth roots. On top of an implant a dentist can place a wide variety of appliances or prostheses.
Implants commonly are used to replace a single missing tooth so the teeth adjacent to the missing tooth do not have to be cut to accept a fixed bridge. When multiple teeth are missing implants can provide strong support to allow an implant supported bridge to restore the missing teeth. Sometimes natural teeth are not sufficiently strong to accomplish this.
Implants require a definite amount of bone to success. It is the integration of the bone to the implant that determines its strength and durability. When bone levels are insufficient, special bone augmentation procedures can create it allowing successful implant placement.
Implants can be used with both fixed and removable prostheses of many different designs and functions. They can also be used as anchors in orthodontic tooth movement. This is especially helpful when there are insufficient remaining teeth to stabilize the pulling forces of the orthodontic braces.
In cosmetic dentistry, implants, when combined with aesthetic porcelain crowns, can become totally invisible in the mouth, exactly replicating the natural looking tooth it replaced.
